Building an off-season base for skate skiing in Gatineau Park

The season is won in July. Our approach to single-leg power and sport-specific endurance before the first snowfall.

Building an off-season base for skate skiing in Gatineau Park

Why ski season is built in summer

The strongest cross-country skiers in Gatineau Park - competitive or simply passionate - share one habit: they don't start prepping in November. They start in July. At our physiotherapy clinic in Chelsea, every fall we see skiers walk in with low-back pain, pes anserinus tendinopathy, or hip flexor syndromes. The cause is almost always the same: a ski volume that exceeds what the body has been prepared to handle.

Skate skiing is extremely demanding on the glute-quad-calf chain on one leg at a time. If unilateral strength hasn't been developed, the lower back compensates. And the lower back wasn't built for that.

The strength block we prescribe in July and August

Our standard program rests on three pillars. First: unilateral strength. Bulgarian split squats, high step-ups, weighted lateral lunges - three to four sets of six to ten reps, twice a week. Second: power. Single-leg jumps, lateral bounds, counter-movement squat jumps, in short explosive sets. Third: rotational core stability, because every skate push is a controlled rotation.

Four to six weeks of this work literally transforms the first November session. The athletes we follow report a sense of control and absence of low-back fatigue that changes the entire season.

Sport-specific endurance: roller skis and bounding

Roller skiing on the Outaouais's quieter roads - Beurrerie Road, Highway 105 north - remains the best motor transfer. If you don't have access to roller skis, uphill bounding (skate jumps) with poles reproduces most of the pattern. One to two sessions of 45 to 60 minutes per week is enough.

The goal isn't volume - it's quality of movement. Thirty minutes of clean bounding beats an hour of sloppy patterns that hard-wire bad mechanics.

Preventing the classic skier injuries

Three injuries dominate among our skier patients: exertional low back pain, pes anserinus tendinopathy on the inner knee, and psoas syndrome. All are largely predictable with an adapted strength plan and attention to internal-rotation hip mobility.

If you ski regularly in Gatineau Park and want to enter the season without pain, a pre-season physiotherapy assessment identifies deficits before they become injuries. It's the most cost-effective investment you'll make for your winter.

Pain that won't go away? Let's talk.
