Kinesiology or physiotherapy: what's the difference?
We get asked this every week. The two professions complement each other, but they don't do the same job. Here's how to choose, and when both have their place.

Two professions, two goals
Physiotherapy diagnoses and treats injuries, pain, and functional limitations. The physiotherapist assesses the cause of a problem, uses manual techniques, therapeutic exercise, and education to restore function. You see a physiotherapist when you're in pain, recovering from an injury or surgery, or when a movement is problematic.
Kinesiology is the other side. The kinesiologist works with human movement and exercise to improve fitness, performance, prevention, and overall health. They don't assess pathology, they assess your physical capacity and build a tailored training program. You see a kinesiologist when you want to move better, stronger, longer, without getting hurt.
When to see a physiotherapist
If you have acute pain, a recent injury, stiffness that's setting in, or you're recovering from surgery, that's physiotherapy. The physiotherapist has the skills to assess the source of the problem, form a diagnostic hypothesis, and intervene with techniques outside the kinesiologist's scope, such as joint mobilization, soft tissue techniques, or the treatment of specific conditions.
At our physiotherapy clinic in Chelsea, we see people who come for a locked knee, a shoulder that won't lift, chronic back pain, or a stubborn tendinopathy. The starting point is always pain or loss of function.
When to see a kinesiologist
If you have no pain but want to get back to training, prepare for a ski season, manage a chronic health condition through exercise, or simply move more without injury, the kinesiologist is the right professional. They supervise your exercise program, adjust the load, correct technique, and ensure you progress without exceeding what your body can tolerate.
The kinesiologist is also the bridge between the end of rehab and the return to sport. Once the physiotherapist has put you back in working order, the kinesiologist takes over to rebuild strength, endurance, and power in a structured way. Many of our patients move from one to the other, and that's often what makes the difference between a decent recovery and a true return to performance.
The pairing that works, in Chelsea
In a clinic that offers both, like ours, the physiotherapist and the kinesiologist work together. The physio fixes the problem, the kinesiologist prevents relapse and pushes you beyond where you were before. If you're unsure, start by calling. We'll point you to the right professional, or both.
If you live in Chelsea, Cantley, Wakefield, or Gatineau and don't know who to see, book an assessment. We'll look at your situation together and tell you honestly whether it's physiotherapy, kinesiology, or both.
